Are You Doing These Right When Your Cat's Home Alone During the Holidays?

With holidays around the corner, many plan to travel far but are hesitant to board their cats due to risks of loss or contagion. So, what preparations should be made for your feline "masters" before departure?

No.1 Eating

Ensure there's ample food supply. Dry food suffices as wet food or canned food can spoil if not finished in one go, possibly causing vomiting or gastrointestinal issues which are hard to address when you're away. Prepare double the usual amount; for a 7-day trip, stock up for half a month. If the trip is longer, arrange for someone to replenish food and water, especially in summer when food spoilage risks are higher. Moreover, opt for unbreakable material for food bowls to prevent your cat from breaking the bowl in a temper when canned food is unavailable.

No.2 Drinking Water

For cats, drinking is a perennial issue as they prefer flowing, clean water - which explains their habit of "washing feet" in your water cup. If away for 3-4 days, set up multiple water bowls, cleaned and filled with water. Choose heavier bowls separated from food dishes to prevent spillage and contamination of dry food with water, which could breed bacteria and molds. For longer absences, automatic water dispensers with large capacity are ideal to ensure a clean supply and reduce spill risks. Still, place extra water bowls in corners as a precaution.

No.3 Litter Box

Cats cherish cleanliness, especially for their toilets, so have multiple litter boxes ready. Some cats may hold urine if the box is dirty, risking urinary system diseases. Others might eliminate inappropriately if the box isn't clean, with the floor being better than your sofa or bed as a statement for your prolonged absence. For a week's trip, prepare 2-3 litter boxes for one cat, and 3-5 boxes for 2-3 cats. If purchasing numerous litter boxes isn't preferable, consider a makeshift option with a cardboard box lined with a pee pad or newspaper, topped with cat litter. Place them in the cat's usual spots. For trips over 10 days, it's wise to have someone tidy up to ensure your cat's comfort and prevent worse scenarios.
